Advanced Astronomy

 

This class is for anyone who wish to delve into the depth of Astronomy (hence the name). We recommend that you participate in the “Introduction to Astronomy” before attending this course; however, it is not required. This course is perfect for anyone who has a fervor in Astronomy, and is willing to learn about some of the deeper and more complex sides to space and Astronomy. Please note that this course does require some mathematical knowledge; preferably, to be very comfortable with Algebra.

  • Lesson 1: Scales of Magnitude

    From atoms to galaxies, the universe is comprised of a variety of intriguing monstrosities. We will explore some of the extremities of the universe in terms of the scales of magnitude.

  • Lesson 2: Quantum Mechanics

    Don’t be intimidated by the idea of “Quantum Mechanics;” it truly is a fascinating topic. Everything from the interaction of bosons and quarks to the existence of light are all intriguing topics covered in quantum mechanics.

  • Lesson 3: Forces of the Universe

    We talked about the forces of the universe in our introduction class. However, what does that mean when we see it through quantum mechanics?

  • Lesson 4: General and Special Relativity

    Two of Einstein’s most prominent theories - the General and Special Theory of Relativity. What do they mean and how does it relate to the cosmos around us?

  • Lesson 5: Gravity and Space Time

    From Newtonian physics to Einstein’s relativity, what is fundamentally different in our classical understanding of gravity?

  • Lesson 6: Dark Matter

    Some mysterious force is governing our universe, occupying 26% if entire cosmos compared to the mere 5% of normal matter. What is that?

  • Lesson 7: Nuclear Physics

    “Physics” may seem to be a different realm than “Astronomy.” However, in fact, they are closely tied together. In this lesson, we explore the concept of nuclear physics to gain a deeper understanding of the universe.

    We now know the Big Bang as the origin of everything. But why? What evidence do we have?

  • Lesson 9: Formation of the Universe

    The big bang happened - So what? How did the universe came to existence today? How can we explain stars, galaxies, and other bizarre phenomenon in the profound cosmos?

    What’s making the universe accelerating its expansion? What are these mysterious energy proposals called “dark energy?”

  • This course is open to everyone, but you are strongly encouraged to have background knowledge in algebra, physics, and basic astronomy, and be interested in learning the topics listed in the course catalog.

  • All ages can apply to in-depth astronomy, but we strongly recommend a solid understanding of algebra as math and physics are included in this course.

  • Our astronomy courses are starting off as daily 1-2 hour daily summer classes lasting for around two weeks. Specific information like time will be provided as we get to early summer.
